In the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools - Mathematics - Oscar received a Merit for his work. A great result in an International Competition. Well done.
Can an egg bounce? 3L proved it can ! 3L students followed the bouncing experiment with additional experiments based on their own ideas and scientific questioning and came up with some interesting results. To make an egg bouncy we put it in white vinegar - here are some reports from Charlie
With some eggs, like the one Neve is holding in the photo above, once the shell had dissolved, the yolk seemed to shine like a light inside the egg.
For another experiment we put an egg in white vinegar with purple food dye added, another in bi-carb soda with green dye and another with water and blue dye. The shell of the egg in vinegar dissolved and the yolk and albumen turned purple, the other 2 eggs did not absorb the colour. Why? 3L discussed and wrote about a photo, taken about 1935, of children walking along a wall. Here are some excerpts from the writing done by 3L.
I wonder what they're doing? I wonder what they played in those days? Probably some impressive, enticing and eye-catching type of game! Because they had nothing else to do. They had no TV, radio, computers and telephone. Imagine that! Charlie Hough They are walking slowly so they don't fall off. One of the boys has a determined look on his face. Neve Leneehan I'm with some of my friends and we're walking on a brick wall. We're walking on a brick wall because there are a lot of mean and scary dogs on the other side. Jake Sullivan The first boy looks like he has gotten splashed with filthy black mud. He also has a serious look on his dirty face. The second boy looks cleaner than the first boy but he is also pretty grubby too! The third boy looks nice and flush. He has nicely combed hair with attractive, fashionable clothes and nice leather shoes. Kira Pendlebury We have to walk on the wall because there is a big mud puddle and we can't walk around the puddle because the factory is there. When we walk on the wall we see people going in and out of the factory a lot of times with metal and timber. Dein Foster The kid in the middle is wearing a top, pants and shoes. I think he is holding timber to stop him falling off the wall. If he fell off the wall he would hurt himself or break his arm. Nathanial Mundy We found a brick wall and we couldn't go around it so we had to go on top of it, but Mary fell off and was knocked out. So we jumped off and Mary woke up and said "What year is it?" Tom said "1932". Max Andrews If I were there I think it would smell like timber because there is a Timber and Joinery shop behind the wall. Katie McDonald In the University of NSW Spelling Competition held recently, Oscar Ferguson-Garrood gained a Credit mark. Well done, Oscar.
3L as a part of NAIDOC week have developed a short film about a Dreamtime story called 'How the Birds Got Their Colours'. We did all the filming, acting, talking and making of the video ourselves. We hope you enjoy watching our video! |
